Sri Lanka has quietly become one of the world's most sought-after honeymoon destinations — and for good reason. In just seven days, you can journey from the ancient temples of the Cultural Triangle to the emerald tea hills of Ella, and finally arrive at the powder-white beaches of the south coast. This is not a country you rush through. It is one you savour.
At Golden Island Travels, we have crafted hundreds of honeymoon itineraries for couples from the UK, Australia, Europe, and beyond. This guide shares our most popular 7-day route — the one that consistently earns the most glowing reviews from newlyweds.
Day 1 — Arrival in Colombo & Transfer to Sigiriya
Your honeymoon begins the moment you land. Your private chauffeur will meet you at Bandaranaike International Airport with a name board and cold towels — a small touch that sets the tone for everything that follows. The drive north to Sigiriya takes approximately 3.5 hours, winding through coconut groves and paddy fields. Check in to your boutique hotel and rest before a candlelit dinner overlooking the jungle.
Day 2 — Sigiriya Rock Fortress & Dambulla Cave Temple
Rise early to climb the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress before the midday heat. The 5th-century citadel rises 200 metres above the surrounding plains, and the views from the summit — across an endless canopy of green — are genuinely breathtaking. Your licensed guide will share the fascinating history of King Kashyapa and the frescoes that have survived 1,500 years. In the afternoon, visit the golden Dambulla Cave Temple, one of the best-preserved Buddhist cave complexes in Asia.
Tip: Book the sunrise climb at Sigiriya. Arriving at the summit as the mist clears over the jungle is one of the most romantic moments in Sri Lanka.
Day 3 — Kandy: The Hill Capital
Drive south through spice gardens and rubber plantations to Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka. Visit the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic, stroll around the Kandy Lake at sunset, and watch a traditional Kandyan dance performance in the evening. Kandy's boutique hotels — many perched on the hillside with panoramic views — make for an exceptionally romantic overnight stay.
Day 4 — Ella: Tea Country & Train Journeys
The drive from Kandy to Ella through the hill country is one of the most scenic in the world. Alternatively, take the famous train from Kandy to Ella — widely regarded as one of the most beautiful train journeys on earth. Wind through tea plantations, past waterfalls and misty peaks. In Ella, hike to Little Adam's Peak for sunset views over the valley, and dine at a rooftop restaurant as the stars emerge above the mountains.
Day 5 — Yala National Park Safari
From Ella, your chauffeur will drive you south to Yala National Park — home to the world's highest density of leopards. An early morning jeep safari offers the best chance of wildlife sightings: leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species. This is a genuinely thrilling experience that most couples say is the highlight of their entire trip. Overnight in a luxury tented camp or eco-lodge on the park boundary.
Day 6 — Mirissa: Whale Watching & Beach
Head west along the southern coast to Mirissa, one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful beach towns. Between November and April, Mirissa is one of the best places in the world to see blue whales — the largest animals on earth — on a morning boat tour. Spend the afternoon on the beach, swim in the warm Indian Ocean, and watch the sunset from the famous Parrot Rock with a cocktail in hand.
Day 7 — Galle Fort & Departure
Your final day takes you to the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort, a perfectly preserved Dutch colonial fortress on the southwestern tip of the island. Walk the ramparts at sunrise, browse the boutique jewellery shops and art galleries within the fort walls, and enjoy a final Sri Lankan breakfast at one of the fort's celebrated cafés. Your chauffeur will then transfer you to Colombo airport for your departure.
Why Choose a Private Chauffeur for Your Honeymoon?
The difference between a private chauffeur honeymoon and a group tour is the difference between a tailored suit and an off-the-rack jacket. Your itinerary bends around your preferences — if you want to linger longer at Sigiriya, you do. If you want to skip the tourist crowds and find a hidden waterfall, your driver knows exactly where to go. At Golden Island Travels, our chauffeur-guides are licensed, English-speaking, and have spent years learning the roads, the stories, and the hidden gems of this island.
Our honeymoon packages include a private sedan or SUV, a licensed chauffeur-guide, hotel recommendations, safari bookings, and 24/7 WhatsApp support throughout your trip. Prices start from USD 650 for a 7-day private tour.
Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka for a Honeymoon
Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons, but the good news is that when one coast is wet, the other is dry. The southwest coast (Mirissa, Galle, Unawatuna) is best from November to April. The east coast (Arugam Bay, Trincomalee) is best from May to September. The hill country and Cultural Triangle are beautiful year-round, though December to March offers the most reliable weather across the whole island.
